On another, ahem, unnamed forum, I recall the thread view page had the list of users viewing the thread, and the ones who had a reply box open were italicized. The was this, ahem, unnamed poster who used to hang and watch for particular names in italics and would slap in a quick post like, "Hey, Dorkster, say something stupid!" Which, of course, would appear right above the hapless poster's post.

Apart from that (which was mildly amusing), I am not completely sure that feature had other uses, except perhaps to help you watch for pending replies, but if it is fairly easy to plug in, it might be kinda nice to have.

So, if someone is replying to a thread, it italicizes their name on the thread view?

That should be easy enough, but it won't be able to track if someone is posting in the quick reply box.

There should be a quick reply button at the bottom of the thread. What browser are you using?

I am using a WebKit browser (like Safari or Chrome) on an iPad most of the time. At least two forums I have been on put an open reply box at the bottom that you can just click in and write up a post, with a subset of format buttons. Yes, I see the quick reply, but it is just not the same ;)

Oh, and kind of related: please put a tag at the bottom of posts that says "Last Edited by: <username> at <time>" so that if a mod (sideways glance) goes back and edits a post, it will be displayed right there at the bottom of the post (forums usually include a box to explain why it was edited).
