"Officer Jeffrey Smith, a 12-year veteran of the force, and Officer Howard Liebengood, a 16-year Capitol police veteran, also responded to the 6 January attack and later died by suicide.

Hashida’s death comes a week after officers testified to a House select committee about their harrowing experiences defending Congress.

Almost 600 people have been criminally charged for their part in the events."

"Smith worries about the rise of ethnocentric nationalism on the right. This nationalism, Smith writes, wants to make the United States an “ethnic nation,” in which the nation becomes “the sole source of a person’s identity” to separate “‘us’ from ‘them.’” To the new nationalists on the right, being an American is primarily a cultural — or worse, racial — category."

As Smith writes in Reclaiming Patriotism in an Age of Extremes, patriotism is treated on campuses as “an unenlightened preference for one’s own at the expense of a more enlightened, cosmopolitan point of view.” Smith worries that, “in educated circles,” patriotism “has come to seem morally questionable.” He hopes to convince his readers not to dismiss patriotism as such.

The question of patriotism is important. Is patriotism just sentiment?
Patriotism is not just believing in your nation, it means doing something and being an active citizen.

WASHINGTON — President Donald J. Trump pressed top Justice Department officials late last year to declare that the election was corrupt even though they had found no instances of widespread fraud, so that he and his allies in Congress could use the assertion to try to overturn the results, according to new documents provided to lawmakers and obtained by The New York Times.

The exchange unfolded during a phone call on Dec. 27 in which Mr. Trump pressed the acting attorney general at the time, Jeffrey A. Rosen, and his deputy, Richard P. Donoghue, on voter fraud claims that the department had disproved. Mr. Donoghue warned that the department had no power to change the outcome of the election. Mr. Trump replied that he did not expect that, according to notes Mr. Donoghue took memorializing the conversation.

About 200 Afghan interpreters and their families have arrived in the US - the first of a group of 2,500 Afghans being evacuated as the Taliban advances.

The interpreters are being resettled under a visa programme for those who worked with the US during the recently ended 20-year war with the Taliban.

They arrived in the early hours of Friday morning and were taken to Fort Lee military base in Virginia

Donald Trump managed to evade legal accountability throughout his presidency. That might be about to change — and the newest sign comes in a brief filed by the Justice Department. It doesn’t directly address the former president, yet has ominous implications for his ability to avoid responsibility for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection.

The Justice filing came in a lawsuit in which Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) and a number of Capitol Police officers have sued Trump and others for their roles in the insurrection. One of those named in the suit, Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), claimed that he is immune from personal liability under a law known as the Westfall Act, which shields federal officials acting within the scope of their employment.

The Justice Department this week threw its weight behind a simple principle: Inciting an insurrection doesn’t fall within a member of Congress’s duties. Obvious as the declaration may seem, Attorney General Merrick Garland’s support for it is essential to a functioning democracy.

“Are you willing to do what it takes to fight for America?” Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) enjoined supporters of then-President Donald Trump at a Jan. 6 rally preceding the storming of the U.S. Capitol. Mr. Brooks invoked bloodshed and death, and exhorted that participants not let the Democratic Party “steal from us our God-given right to control our nation’s destiny.” Now he’s arguing that he spoke these words as part of his professional obligations and therefore may enlist the government to step in as defendant in a lawsuit that Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) filed against him and others, including Mr. Trump.

The use of clear language — Rep. Jamie B. Raskin (D-Md.) spoke of “fascist traitors” while D.C. Police officer Daniel Hodges referred to “terrorists” — was a refreshing departure from mealy-mouth descriptions that obscure the violence and the ideology of the insurrectionists.

It was critical to hear the granular description of that day, especially as it helps to expose the galling dishonesty and appalling bad faith of Republicans.
