Something I have considered for many years. Many comedy clubs have scouts in the audience. I have tons of material; but being basically lazy, I have never taken the steps. I have no problem with audiences; but political correctness can put a damper on a comedy set. Not everyone is as thick skinned as I am; and I don't need a lynch mob waiting for me after the show. I have ( for now ) narrowed it down to grandchildren & extraterrestrials.

Hardly seems fair, that the comedy writer, who creates the material, may be paid less, than the comic who presents the material. Actually, I'm not 100% on that opinion. I would post some of my material; but it is impossible to include inflections, and I don't really want my work in the wind. I would like to contact someone in the business though.

I recommend Judy Carter's Standup Comedy, the Book. It's an excellent primer.

I have tried out my material on many people; and received excellent reviews, and I was told many times, to take it to the stage. Approaching a new audience is the challenge. I'm in my 60s; and it's not a question of "inside jokes", but being sure you can relate to an age group. Some material carries weight, regardless of the age group, but not all. I wouldn't expect people in their 20s to have the depth of someone my age, who has put some miles behind himself in life.

Contacting someone in the business, who is reputable & well known, would be a plus. Most on line searches produce little more than scams. I don't expect an hour of Larry David's time, without serious good luck.

I actually managed to get in touch with someone in the business. Took some leg work; but he did get back to me. He's reviewing some of my material. I gave him permission to pass it along or use it. The rule is, submit, submit, submit.

I find that timing and tone is critical.
The sarcastic cracks I make have endeared me to many people.

I have seen some people try to deliver the same phrase (a direct rip-off) and watched it fall flat.
Happens once in a while; not just a one time thing. I am convinced the delivery is crucial.

That's where the talent gets paid: turning funny writing into an hysterical performance.

I have worked with many Brits over the years. Got along very well with most (5% were clunkers.)
They had the idea that I was funny because of a dry delivery with great timing; almost British-ish...

I think they meant that as a compliment.

I forget who this about acting, but I believe it:
Dying is easy, funny is hard.

The thing is, inflections, shock value, emotions, must be presented by the person on stage. Submitting a joke, a set, a performance by email or snail mail will not include those qualities. All about presentation. I will dig up one of my submissions; Dog Negotiations With The Grandchildren. Depth, humor, and a philosophical view of life from two kids who want a dog. Be right back.

DOG NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE GRANDCHILDREN : I have
always encouraged the grandchildren to view
life in depth,
and to be philosophical when dealing with

problems/challenges; to never allow themselves to be
pigeonholed. The
day came when my advice paid off.

One day
they approached me with, "Pop Pop, we need a dog".

Initially, I was against it, knowing the responsibility that
came with
owning a pet. I already knew, Pop Pop, "WE" need a
dog, translated to,
Pop Pop, "YOU" need a dog. Still, I knew
having a pet would be a
positive experience for them, would
add stability & a sense of
responsibility to their
lives; not to mention, my memories of the
menageries from my
childhood. So to be fair, I made them a proposition.
If they
can come up with something undeniable/factual,
concerning
having a dog, I will allow it. Had to be concrete,
something
I could visualize. Nothing cosmic, like, if we don't have
a
dog, we'll be sad. Had to be solid, something I could not

deny. With that, I actually thought I had them stonewalled.
I tell them
to take the time to discuss it; then present
their case. They have one
shot, so make it count. They head
for the next room. 20 minutes later I
hear giggling. Now I'm
uncomfortable. They head back, still giggling.
The little
one is the ambassador, he approaches me. I ask him if
they
have something irrefutable/undeniable. This was the
reply:

"There is no dog shit in the yard".
You
asked for something undeniable. I GOT THEM THE
DOG
